PTA Membership

The Oak Park PTA seeks ways to help students and their families learn and grow, and to participate in a variety of different activities. We want every student to have the best educational experience possible while also helping to build a stronger bond in families.

We encourage all parents and school staff to show their support by becoming PTA members. As a member, you can take part in voting as we make important decisions for our school. Members are also welcome to be a part of planning committees, help at events or join the executive board.

The dues for one person to join the PTA is now $7.00 per member. From that amount, the National PTA receives $2.25, California State PTA receives $1.25, Ninth District receives $1.00, and San Diego Unified Council receives $0.50 of the membership dues collected. Only the remaining $2.00 of the dues stays with Oak Park. If you choose to give a larger amount, Oak Park PTA will receive what remains after the other amounts are deducted. If you have not received a membership envelope, you are welcome to pick one up in the main office.

For a complete description of the history and purposes of the PTA, as stated by the National PTA, you can visit their website at www.pta.org. You will also find a variety of parent resources and other useful information on their website. In addition, on your PTA Membership Card you will find a list of PTA member benefits and contact information for the National PTA.

President & Secretary Positions Filled

We are happy to announce that the positions of PTA president and secretary have been filled. Thanks to Jennifer Jenkins (president) and Zeinabu Davis (secretary) for being willing to take on these positions!

We still would like to fill the positions of Ways & Means (fundraising) and Program Chairman (to oversee events). Please contact us if you are interested in helping out with one of these positions or if there are other ways that you would like to be involved. We're always looking for new parents to be a part of the PTA!

PTA President & Secretary Needed

The Oak Park PTA is in need of a President and a Secretary for the 2009-2010 school year. Some parents previously involved in the PTA are leaving Oak Park because their children are entering middle school. Unfortunately, we still have these two important positions that need to be filled. According to our bylaws, if these positions are not filled, we will not be able to have a PTA. That means we will not be able to spend any money for field trip buses, music department expenses, special assemblies or family events that we have throughout the school year. These are just a few of the ways that our PTA supports Oak Park.

The Secretary position would only require that you attend monthly PTA meetings to take minutes and then type up the minutes to pass out at the next month's meeting. The President position requires that you lead the monthly PTA board meetings and oversee the other PTA board positions. Fortunately, our treasurer, historian, membership coordinator and hospitality coordinators are all returning in the fall and are very familiar with their positions and what needs to be done. There also will be a district training in the fall where you can learn more about your specific position (such as president or secretary). You can also ask questions and talk with other people who have previously held these positions. In addition, the Oak Park PTA board will be meeting on August 24th before the school year begins to have a planning meeting. This should make for an easy transition into the new school year.

Planning for the Summer

It has been a busy school year for the PTA, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received. Because of the involvement and dedication of many parents and staff members, we were able to accomplish a lot!

As we look towards the summer, we encourage you to find ways to keep your children involved in activities that keep both their minds and bodies active. It’s a great time to go to the beach, play at the park, ride bikes, go camping, visit the zoo or do other outdoor activities. Try to limit the amount of time that children spend watching TV or playing any type of electronic or computer games. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting children (two years & older) to a maximum of two hours of quality screen time per day.

There are so many fun things to do in San Diego, and many of them are free or inexpensive. Please check out the links below (right hand column) to find a variety of activities for your family to do. There are also links to learning activities and ideas for getting your kids ready for the new school year. In addition, you can always sign up your kids for the summer reading program at any of the local libraries. This is a great way to encourage them to keep reading over the summer and also to just enjoy some good books. If you’d like to purchase some inexpensive books for yourself or for your kids, we recommend checking out the Friends Bookstore in Lemon Grove (right next door to the Lemon Grove Library). Soft cover children’s books are only 25cents each, and all other books and videos are also great deals. On the last Saturday of each month all items are half price!

Finally, before you know it we will be gearing up to go back to school. Please consider how you could be involved at Oak Park by volunteering your time, ideas or talents. There are so many things that the PTA would like to do in the new school year, but it takes a lot of people to bring it all together. It's also very rewarding working alongside others who are excited about making a difference in the lives of the families at Oak Park. We are looking forward to a great school year. We’ll see you in the fall!

Start Your Spring Cleaning!

Oak Park's first Super Shopper Swap was such a success that we will be having a Springtime Super Shopper Swap on March 26th & 27th from 12:30-1:30pm. So, start cleaning out your closets, garages, kitchen cupboards, etc! On March 24th & 25th we will be accepting donations in the auditorium of your clean, good quality children's and adult's clothing/shoes, toys, books & small household items that you no longer need.

Volunteers are needed to help sort and lay out items during the mornings of March 26th & 27th. If you are able to help or if you have any questions, please contact Teresa Michel at tjmichelpta@gmail.com or leave a message in the office.

Storytelling Night

On January 30th we are looking forward to our annual Storytelling Night. The Patchwork Players will be coming that evening to share their stories with us. Make plans to be there at 6:00pm for milk & cookies. Then the storytelling will begin at 6:30pm. Kids are welcome to come in their pajamas and bring along a cozy blanket! Every child that attends will also receive a well-loved book for free.

At the beginning of the evening we will have a short meeting to discuss PTA Executive Board positions that will be open for the 2009-2010 school year. We also will be electing a Nominating Committee. Please seriously consider joining the PTA board. In order to have a PTA next year, we have to fill the positions of President and Secretary. Several other positions also will be open. Please come to our next PTA Executive Board meeting on Feb. 2nd at 6pm to learn more about the positions and find out how your interests/talents could be used in the PTA.

Super Shopper Swap

Are you ready to do a little shopping—for FREE?! First, we need your help. On Dec. 2nd & 3rd (see times listed in "Upcoming Events") bring to the auditorium your clean, good quality children’s and adult’s clothing/shoes, books and small household items that you no longer need. Then on Dec. 4th & 5th come and select items that your family needs at the Super Shopper Swap from 12:30-3pm.

Family Craft Night

Oak Park PTA Executive Board Votes in Support of Prop "S"

The Oak Park PTA Executive Board has voted in support of Prop S. We are encouraging all voters to read about the many improvements that will take place at Oak Park Elementary if Prop S is approved, and to vote on November 4th. Most importantly, Prop S will not raise current taxes. To see the site-specific bond project list for Oak Park Elementary, click on the link in the right hand column. You can also go to www.sandi.net/PropS for more information.

What is Proposition “S”?

Proposition S is a $2.1 billion bond measure that the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has placed before the voters for approval on the November 4, 2008 ballot. If approved by 55% of the voters, Proposition S will:
· Provide bond funds for the repair and renovation of district school facilities as specified in the ballot measure.
· Extend the current Proposition MM tax rate ($66.70 per $100,000 assessed value of taxable property), which expires in 2029, to 2044. This new bond will NOT increase the current tax rate under Proposition MM bonds.
· Provide funding for maintenance and improvement projects at 180 school facilities throughout the district.

Please do your part for Oak Park Elementary, and the many schools in San Diego that will be affected, by voting on November 4th! (Please go to the bottom of the ballot to find Prop S.)

Family & Community Room

If you would like to help your child’s teacher but find it hard to be in the classroom because you have younger children, then the Family & Community Room is the perfect place for you! Every Wednesday beginning at 9 am, parents bring work that their teachers need help completing. Parents help each other to complete the work. You can stay for as long or as short as you like. It’s also a fun time to get to know other parents at Oak Park! Everyone is welcome.

Are you also interested in partnering with your teacher to gather other parent volunteers within the class for classroom events? Then you are invited to join a group of parents who are also trying to help each other figure this out every first Wednesday of the month from 9 am – 10 am in the Family & Community Room. Making Healthy Choices

This school year the Oak Park PTA has decided that it is important for us to take part in helping families make healthy choices for their children. Our first step will be to discontinue the sale of sodas at our PTA events and offer healthier beverage options. In addition, we will have fruits and/or vegetables available for purchase when events are during dinner hours. We hope that these, and any future changes, will make families aware that their health is important to us, and we will do whatever we can to support them.

A great website that provides parents with information on nutrition, tips for healthy living and also recipes and meal ideas is www.mealsmatter.org (also located in our "Resources for Parents" link list in the right hand column). The site can be viewed in English or in Spanish. We highly recommend that you check it out. We think you'll find a lot of useful information for the whole family. The PTA also welcomes your ideas on how we can better educate and support our Oak Park families in making the best nutritional choices for our kids.

Staff Appreciation Week

During the week of May 5-9th we will be showing our appreciation for all that the Oak Park staff does for our children. In addition to the PTA providing breakfast & some special desserts for the staff, you will be able to write notes of appreciation. During the week there will be note paper & designated boxes by the school entrances where parents and students can leave notes for teachers, office staff, custodians—anyone that you would like to thank for what they do. The PTA will then deliver your messages. You are also welcome to show your appreciation in other ways that you might choose throughout the week. Let’s make it a very special week for our dedicated Oak Park Staff!

Show Support at PTA Rally

The San Diego Unified Council of PTA’s will be hosting a rally at Qualcomm Stadium on May 21st at 7pm (gates open at 5pm), and is urging all school staff and families to attend. The purpose of the rally is to oppose the budget cuts proposed by the Governor that will negatively impact every student in our school district. Many of Oak Park’s teachers may be left without jobs. The PTA would like every school to be represented by at least 50-100 people at the rally. That means Oak Park needs YOU to get involved!

In addition to your attendance, we need someone who is willing to make a large banner with our school’s name on it. No other signs will be allowed, but you are encouraged to wear your Oak Park t-shirts. The SDUC of PTA’s is also requesting assistance from off-duty law enforcement officers during the event.

Please plan on attending, and contact the PTA if you are able to help with any of these needs.

Family Movie Night

Thanks to all of the students that voted and helped choose this year’s movie! “Ratatouille” received the most votes and will be shown at Family Movie Night on May 30th at 6pm in the auditorium. There also will be refreshments available for purchase. Come join us for an evening of fun!

On Friday, March 28th, PTA officer elections were held for the 2008-2009 school year. The following are the officers that were elected:

Auditor- Carole Pramas

There were no nominees for the positions of Executive Vice President, Membership Chairperson or Ways & Means/Fundraising Chairperson, which are all very important positions. We also are looking for people to be part of the Room Parent Committee and Hospitality Committee. In addition, we will be forming committees to organize events throughout the school year. There are many ways to be involved and to help make a difference at Oak Park.

If you would like to find out how you can become more involved in the PTA in the coming school year, please contact any of the board members listed, or you may also contact our Hospitality Coordinator, Nannie Osawa or Room Parent Coordinator, Melissa Han. We would love to have more people join us! Our next executive board meeting will be on Monday, April 7th at 6pm in the library. Open House in Parent Room

All parents are invited to an Open House in the Parent Room, which is located in the bungalow between rooms B16 and B17, on Tuesday, March 4th at 9:00am and 6:00pm.

If you haven’t been to the Parent Room before, you will find that it is a great place to meet many needs. If you have small children and are unable to help out in the classroom, you can bring work with you to the Parent Room. Your children are welcome to play, look at books or have a snack while you are there doing work for classroom teachers. The Parent Room is also a great place to go if you just want to relax, have a cup of coffee or visit with other parents.

So, whether this is your first time to the Parent Room, or if you are a regular visitor, we look forward to seeing you at Open House!

March Menagerie

It’s that time of year again that so many of you look forward to—March Menagerie! It’s a great opportunity to spend time with your family and friends while being entertained by a variety of dance performances.

The programs will take place on the evenings of March 7, 14 & 28 at 6:30pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase beginning at 6:00pm. So, mark your calendars for some fun Fridays in March!

PTA Officer Elections for 2008-2009

PTA officer elections will be taking place on March 28th. If you haven’t already turned in a nomination form to the office, we encourage you to do so by March 14th. The only requirement for holding a position is that you are a PTA member for at least 30 days before the elections.

The PTA is a great way to get involved at Oak Park. Not only will you be making a difference for our kids and our school, but you also will find it to be a very rewarding experience for yourself!

Committee Members Needed

The PTA is looking ahead to next school year and would like to begin forming committees to plan school events and activities. Anyone volunteering to be on a committee, or to fill a coordinator or assistant position, will receive lots of guidance from the PTA. So, don’t worry, you won’t be on your own!

Some areas where volunteers are needed include the following:

Hospitality Committee, Program Coordinator & Committee Members (October Festival, Craft Night, Storytelling Night, Movie Night, etc.), Room Parent Coordinator assistants & Box Tops for Education Coordinator.

Please contact Teresa Michel if you have any questions, or if you would like to volunteer to be on a committee or fill an open position. More information will be going home soon regarding these areas of need. With your help we can look forward together to another great school year for our kids!

PTA Nominations

The PTA Nominating Committee was recently elected at our unit meeting on January 25th. This committee will be responsible for selecting nominees for PTA offices for the 2008-2009 school year.

We are encouraging members to consider nominating themselves for an office. You can also co-chair a position with a friend. No experience is necessary. Nomination forms are available in the office and can be turned into the PTA box.

If you would like to be nominated for an office, but are not currently a PTA member, please fill out a membership envelope in the office and pay the $6 dues . You are required to be a member for 30 days before you can be elected for an office. PTA Officer Elections are tentatively scheduled for March 28th.

Founders Day Ice Cream Social

Show your support of the PTA by helping us celebrate Founders Day at our annual Ice Cream Social. As stated by the National PTA, “Founders Day is a reminder of the substantial role that PTA has played locally, regionally, and nationally in supporting parent involvement and working on behalf of all children and families.”

Our celebration will take place on Feb. 29th, beginning at 6:00pm in the auditorium. In addition to making and enjoying delicious ice cream sundaes, there will be a hula hoop contest and a bubble gum blowing contest. Also, come and check out our photo displays of some of this school year's PTA events.

So, mark your calendars for an evening of fun and a time to reflect and take pride in the many accomplishments of the PTA!

Community Advisory Committee for Special Education

Attending the Community Advisory Committee for Special Education (CAC SE) meetings is a way to learn about programs, services, and structure along with receiving information for students, families and educators on trainings conferences and resource fairs. Any parent of a student in the district, staff or community member may attend and participate in CAC meetings.

Monthly meetings are held on a selected Thursday. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 1st, 7-9:00pm, at:

West Campus Auditorium
4133 Mt. Albertine Avenue

If you have a child in Special Education and would like information regarding your child’s services, if you have questions that you need answered, or if you would just like to learn more about the CAC, please plan on attending the meeting.

PTA Unit Meeting

Thanks to the parents that attended our first PTA Unit Meeting of the year in September! In addition to our meeting business, we all enjoyed dessert, and several parents went home with some great raffle prizes.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 5th at 6:30pm in the library. Please come to get an update of what the PTA is doing, to ask questions or to see how you can be involved. Every parent can help make a difference in some way. We look forward to seeing you there!

Family Craft Night

On Friday, December 7th, 6-8:00pm, Oak Park PTA will be hosting its first Family Craft Night. This will be a fun opportunity for parents and kids to spend time creating together. There will be a variety of projects to choose from and also materials available for those who want to put their own creativity to work.

In addition to needing volunteers to help with this fun event, we are asking for donations of any craft materials that you may have available, such as: buttons, popsicle sticks, sequins, craft jewels, wiggly eyes, craft glue, stickers (foam or regular), etc. We appreciate your donation of any craft items that you are able to contribute.

Whether you want to make a project for yourself, or create a gift to give, join us at our craft night for a fun family time!

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!

There’s always a lot of reading going on at Oak Park, and soon we will kick off our annual Read-a-thon. Students should be coming home with reading logs to be filled out during the week. Parents’ help is appreciated in making sure that students read at home and return their completed reading logs. Students with significant participation will be invited to an ice cream sundae party at the end of the school year. All students will also be participating in Multicultural Literacy Week during November 5-9th.

To help kick off the Read-a-thon, Oak Park will be having a Barnes & Noble Book Fair Fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 10th, 10:00am-9:00pm at the Hazard Center location. At designated times during the day we also will be having some special guest storytellers from Oak Park! Our school will receive a portion of the proceeds from purchases made during the Book Fair hours. This money will help us fund our annual Storytelling Night in January.

Look out for a flyer coming home soon with more information and a list of our special guest storytellers.

PTA Membership

The Oak Park PTA seeks ways to help students and their families learn and grow, and to participate in a variety of different activities. We want every student to have the best educational experience possible while also helping to build a stronger bond in families.

We encourage all parents and school staff to show their support by becoming PTA members. As a member, you can take part in voting as we make important decisions for our school. Members are also welcome to be a part of planning committees, help at events or join the executive board.

The dues for one person to join the PTA is $6.00. From that amount, the National PTA receives $1.75, California State PTA receives $1.25, Ninth District receives $1.00, and San Diego Unified Council receives $0.50 of the membership dues collected. The remaining $1.50 of the dues stays with Oak Park. If you choose to give a larger amount, Oak Park PTA will receive what remains after the other amounts are deducted. If you have not received a membership envelope, you are welcome to pick one up in the main office.

The Oak Park Parent Teacher Association (PTA) wants to welcome you to the 2007-2008 school year. We are hoping that this will be our best year yet at Oak Park!

One of our major focuses this year will be increasing our parent involvement. We know that many of you already give much of your time to help out at Oak Park, and it is greatly appreciated.

As stated in the California State PTA Core Values:

“We believe parents are children’s first teachers and that parent involvement is essential throughout a child’s educational experience.”

We are hoping that this year even more of you will be able to find a way to be a part of your child’s school. Not only will you help make a difference in your child’s education, but being involved can also be a very rewarding experience for you! We are looking forward to having many parents participate in our new volunteer program this year.

Make Your Summer Count

It’s hard to believe, but summer will soon be here. As you look ahead to how your children will spend the summer, you may want to keep some of the following ideas in mind to make the summer both fun and productive.

Visit museums and discuss with your children what they learned during their visit. (Balboa Park has free admission to different museums the first four Tuesdays of each month. Go on-line to www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/balboa/index.shtml to see which museums are free.)

Sign up your children for swimming lessons. Call soon and find out when registration will begin.

Join your local public library’s summer reading program. It’s a great way to keep your kids reading throughout the summer while also looking forward to the incentives and the end of the summer party that most libraries offer.

Spend time doing puzzles and playing strategy games with your children. Not only will they have fun spending time together, but they will also keep their minds active during the long summer.

Make sure your kids get plenty of exercise! Limit the amount of time your child watches TV or uses the computer. (The AAP recommends no more than one to two hours per day of quality screen time). Encourage your children to play outdoors, take walks, ride their bikes, play at a park or go swimming. These all can be fun activities to do as a family.

Have kids keep a journal of summer trips or activities.
